Choose an approach before choosing a brand

The examples below describe design choices, not fixed-price offers or completed customer installations. The panel count, battery capacity and equipment are established through assessment.

Solar first, with room to consider storage later

For a household able to use electricity during daylight, a solar-only proposal is a useful comparison. Consider roof layout, daytime consumption and likely surplus generation. If a battery may follow, discuss inverter choices and cable routes now; later compatibility still needs checking.

Solar and storage for evening use

A home with demand after sunset may benefit from storing some daytime surplus. Compare the expected surplus with evening consumption and the battery’s usable capacity and output. Extra storage has limited value if it cannot regularly be charged or used. Ask to see the same forecast with and without a battery.

Existing solar with a battery retrofit

If your panels already work well, a storage assessment can focus on the inverter, metering, location and electrical connection. Share your existing equipment details and any Feed-in Tariff arrangement before changes are proposed. Our battery retrofit guide explains the questions to ask.

What should be included in the quotation?

  • Panel quantity, layout and total capacity, where new solar is included.
  • Exact inverter and battery models, usable storage and output.
  • Mounting, scaffolding, access and agreed cable routes.
  • Electrical work and any identified supply requirements.
  • Grid applications or notifications, testing and commissioning.
  • Relevant certification, monitoring setup and handover.
  • Applicable warranty documents and aftercare contact details.

What needs a separate decision?

Ask the quotation to state whether roof repairs, structural work, additional electrical upgrades, unusual access costs, bird protection and making good are included or excluded. Do not assume these are standard inclusions. An EV charger, hot-water diversion, backup equipment and ongoing maintenance also need an explicit scope if you want them.

For backup, identify the circuits you want to supply and the equipment needed. A battery installation does not automatically provide power during a grid outage.

What affects the installed cost?

Roof access and complexity, the number of roof faces, cable distances, electrical condition, equipment choice and storage capacity all affect the work. Backup and future expansion requirements can change the design too. Your quotation confirms the installed price for your home.

Compare total installed scope rather than just the panel or battery price. Check payment terms, exclusions and warranty conditions, and keep generation estimates separate from tariff-dependent savings. The solar savings guide explains how to compare assumptions.

Prepare for a useful conversation

Have your postcode, annual electricity use, roof information and existing equipment details ready. Tell us whether your priority is daytime generation, evening use, an EV or backup. We can then discuss which options merit a survey.
